I’ve had a good lesson in cross-gender golf in 2015. Living half the year in his place, I had a hard time finding any women to play with. Usually it was me and three guys. Living half the year in my place, I played my weekly rounds with my women’s clubs, or sometimes it was him and three gals.
You can read the 4 reasons why I like playing golf with guys. Here’s the other side of that story, four reasons why I like playing golf with women.
WOMEN GOLFERS TEND TO BE MORE INTERESTING THAN MEN GOLFERS.
Most of the guys talk golf. “My grip … my balance … my backswing … blah blah blah” ad nauseum. This is OK for an hour or so, but I have not managed to get around 18 holes that quickly with either gender. Women talk about their lives, their friends, their jobs, their SOs, their clothes. Women try to connect. It’s a better social experience.
THE GAME SEEMS TO GO FASTER WHEN PLAYING GOLF WITH WOMEN.
Women average a few more shots per round than men do, yet, they seem to move faster on the golf course. This may be partly self-consciousness about being labeled slow players. I think women worry about the perception of the men behind them, and the man in the marshal cart, and so they tend to be very aware of their position on the course. Either that or they’re very busy and want to make sure they have time for the 19th hole.
WOMEN GENERALLY PLAY BY THE RULES.
And when I say women play by the rules, I mean The Rules of Golf, not some insider accordance that allows for dropping your ball where it went out of bounds, or picking up a putt you’ve just rolled farther past the hole than the original. They play by the rules we all know, which makes it easier for the other players to know when to keep silent, where to stand and when to move on. I find this comforting.
WOMEN GENERALLY BEHAVE WITHOUT MACHISMO.
I have a man friend who prefers to play golf with women rather than men because women generally are less crude in language, less likely to throw a club in anger, and less likely to urinate on a tree. I’ve noticed they also are less likely to play from tees that make the course too long for them, and they are less prone to delusions of grandeur. I mean, when a woman who can hit her 3-wood no farther than 150 yards is 165 yards from the green, she does not stand in the fairway waiting for the green to clear.
I can think of many more reasons why I like playing golf with women. But, I gave only 4 reasons why I like playing golf with men, so for the sake of balance, I think I’ll just stop here. Perhaps you have something to add?
