Musings on golf club genitalia

How do you tell a woman’s 7-iron from a man’s 7-iron?

GottaGoGolf Magazine promises to research this question thoroughly, including finding out how our readers tell the difference, how really great players tell the difference, and how the equipment companies tell the difference.

I’m just thinking about it because Cleveland Golf today announced some introductions, its Women’s HB irons and a new putter. And because the economy of the last couple of years has put the brakes on golf equipment innovations for women. And because a couple of years ago when I went searching for women’s irons at a demo day, the MacGregor rep said, “You don’t need women’s clubs,” and put an 8-iron in my hands that struck the ball so pure I was sold.

Last week in Savannah, Georgia, I had to rent clubs. So sold was I by the MacGregor rep, I asked for men’s clubs. Now, I do not have a fast swing speed, I am quite sure. But I am tall and I am strong. And I shot 93 with the men’s rental set of Callaways, on a tough course where I had no local knowledge. (My current index is 20.) In fact the woman I was paired with asked to try “my” driver — and was quite enamored.

Which got me thinking…are “women’s” clubs merely inferior versions of “men’s” clubs? Or is there really a logical way to tell a woman’s 7-iron from a man’s 7-iron?

Stay tuned as we explore this mystery and more in our 2011 editions of GottaGoGolf Magazine. Be sure to register for the free premiere issue!
